Course title: Information theory
Name of lecturer: Prof. Aldo de Luca

Goals: The aim of this course on Information theory is to give an introductory, but rigorous,
presentation of mathematical theory of communication in the frame of Shannon’s approach. The
subject is developed inside the theory of semigroups and the
general theory of codes.
Prerequisites: A background in elementary algebra, probability, and automata theory is required

Course title: Operating Systems III
Name of lecturer: Prof. Clemente Galdi

Objectives:
This class features an in-depth presentation of the internal workings of the Linux open-source
Operating System. The objective is to provide students with the necessary knowledge to critically
assess the specifics of alternative design and implementation choices in different parts of the
system. Moreover, tools and methods will be studied which aim at optimizing the resource usage by
the applications. Finally, tuning techniques will be considered, aimed at tailoring the operating
system to the computing environment at hand.
Prerequisites:
Basic knowledge of Operating Systems concepts. C Programming

Course title: Chemistry of Natural Products from Aquatic Organisms
Type of course: fundamental
Number of credits: 3
Year of study: 1st
Semester: 2nd
Name of lecturer: Prof. Marco d’Ischia
Objective of the course:
The course aims at providing a basic introduction to the chemistry of natural products with special
reference to relationships between primary and secondary metabolism. Specific objective of the
course is to illustrate the chemistry of important classes of primary and secondary metabolites from
aquatic organisms, such as fishes, algae, mussels, crustaceans and prawns, illustrate their structure,
reactivity biological activity, implications for human health and applications, e.g. in food industry,
material and environmental sciences, and as markers for quality control.
Prerequisites: Basic organic chemistry and biochemistry
Course contents:
The course begins with a presentation of main classes of primary and secondary metabolites. It
then brings to focus some aspects of the chemistry of carbohydrates and lipids, with special
reference to carrageenans, alginates, agar, chitins, polyunsaturated fatty acids, steroids and
prostaglandins. A survey of main nitrogenous metabolites including trimethylamine N-oxide and
main volatile substances responsible for fish aroma is also offered along with a brief description of
main methods used to assess freshness and quality of sea food.
Teaching method: Frontal lectures
Assessment methods: Final colloquium

behaviour.
Course contents: Rheology, classes of materials, classes of response to stress. Ductile behaviour
of rocks, deformation mechanisms and microstructures. Brittle behaviour of rocks, fracture
mechanics, crack modes. Rock friction. Wear and gouge behaviour. Stick-slip and stable sliding.
Fault nucleation and growth processes. Fault rocks, structure and deformation mechanisms. Strain
localization and fault zone weakening. Fault topography and morphology. 3D analysis of fault
systems; thrust systems; balanced cross-sections (with exercises).
Prerequisites: Basic knowledge of fundamentals of structural geology.
