Cannabis Prohibition
"There is no question about it; the worldwide prohibition of cannabis is one of the most effective and profitable frauds carried out this century."- Mel Thomas Maybe I'm a little confused and just don't understand, or maybe I'm just really fucking stupid, if so can someone please enlighten me as to why it is against the law to grow and use cannabis plants? I can go to my local store and buy enough alcohol or aspirin to kill myself in one sitting. I can purchase as much tobacco as I want, however, if I smoke one joint I can be arrested. It doesn't make any sense, no one has ever died as a direct result of ingesting cannabis, nor have there been any instances of brain receptor damage through cannabis use. THC stimulates specialist receptors in the brain, but unlike alcohol and other drugs, cannabis chemicals do not wear out the receptors that they stimulate, partly because we produce a chemical in our brains called Anandamide, also known as
N-
arachidonoylethanolamine or AEA, which is an endogenous
cannabinoid neurotransmitter. The name is taken from the
Sanskrit word ananda, which means "bliss, or delight." This
brain chemical is similar to the cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant itself. One estimate of
THC's lethal dose for humans indicates that roughly 1500 pounds (680 kilograms) of cannabis
would have to be smoked within 15 minutes (approx). If you wanted to kill someone using 1500
pounds of cannabis you would be better advised dropping it on them.
Studies indicate that the effective dose of THC is at least 1000 times lower than the estimated lethal dose (therapeutic ratio of 1000:1). Heroin has a therapeutic ratio of 6:1, alcohol and Valium 10:1. Cocaine 15:1. Aspirin has a therapeutic ratio of 20:1; twenty times the recommended dose (40 tablets) can cause death, and almost certainly induce extensive internal bleeding and serious injury to the digestive system. Drugs used to treat patients with cancer, glaucoma and MS are all known to be highly toxic. The ratio of some drugs used in antineoplastic therapies have therapeutic ratios below 1.5:1. All perfectly legal and no plans to criminalize production, trafficking or supply.
In medical terms cannabis is safer than many foods we commonly consume. Aspartame (Aspartamine) is used as an artificial sweetener by the food and drinks industry; yet it is a toxic carcinogen. The dipeptide component of the molecule alters brain chemistry, changing the ratio of catecholamines to indolamines, causing a lowering of seizure threshold; anxiety; depressive and cognitive symptoms. Dying for a Diet Coke? The methyl ester component of aspartame is metabolized to methanol, which is then broken down into formic acid and formaldehyde. Methanol is toxic; formic acid and formaldehyde are potent carcinogens. Aspartame is still perfectly legal and there are no plans to criminalize production, trafficking or supply.
In a recent study of fruit it was found apples contained traces of more than 30 types of pesticides. Eleven different pesticides traces were found on a single bell pepper. Potatoes contain substances known as glycoalkaloids. The most common in potatoes are solanine and chaconine. Light reacts with these substances to turn potato flesh green. The green parts of a potato are a guide to where these substances tend to accumulate which is just below the potato skin. Ingested in quantity these toxic compounds can lead to coma or even death. Eating 10 raw potatoes can result in a toxic response, yet it is physically impossible to eat enough cannabis to induce death. There is no record of any proven, documented cannabis induced fatality in at least 5,000 years of human use. Potatoes are still perfectly legal and as yet there are no plans to criminalize production, trafficking or supply.
Using Cannabis does not give you a mental illness. If it did then there would be over 150,000,000 users exhibiting an extraordinary range of symptoms worldwide. This is not the case. Which came first, the schizophrenic or the spliff? The Gateway argument is that cannabis use will progress to cocaine and heroin addiction. A study in the Netherlands shows cannabis users start between the ages of 18 and 20, while cocaine use starts between 20 and 25. But it concludes that cannabis is not a stepping stone drug. The Institute of Medicine study stated: 'Patterns in progression of drug use are strikingly regular. Because it is the most widely used illicit drug, marijuana is predictably the first drug people encounter. Not surprisingly, most users of other drugs have used marijuana first. In fact, most drug users begin with alcohol and nicotine'. Cannabis users like being stoned, this is unique to the herb so why would a cannabis user seek out drugs with very different effects? Hungry, Happy, Horizontal, thats the effect of good weed. There is, however, the danger that users can eat the entire contents of their refrigerator and then have junk food delivered. Even pizza is more harmful than cannabis, causing heart disease, obesity and high cholesterol due to the saturated fat, salt, sugar and refined flour content. Using the same flawed and unscientific methods used to discredit cannabis I have discovered a link between pizzas and heroin, it appears many heroin addicts have eaten pizza in the past! I am currently evaluating whether McDonalds causes cocaine addiction as most addicts like burgers, and they supply extra wide straws; perfect for sniffing powder in the rest room. Despite my evidence confirming pizza as a gateway drug for heroin they are still legal and there are no plans as yet to criminalize production, trafficking or supply. The anthropologist Weston La Barre speculates that cannabis use reaches as far back as the Mesolithic period where apart from being a source of food, medicine and fibre it was also used in religious-shamanic rituals. The earliest finds that confirm this are in the areas of current day Romania and Russia where archaeologists recovered charred hemp seeds in a pipe cup, basically a water-cooled pipe. The remains were dated to the Neolithic age. Cannabis is an ancient and sacred herb, who has the right to stop you growing and using it? Drugs by their very definition are man made substances. Cannabis is a harmless plant, put it in the earth and it grows. Drugs are needles, powders and nasty tablets, not ancient and beneficial herbs. It is shameful that patients who require the herb cannot legally do so in most countries. There should be no laws to protect a citizen from themselves. In a truly free society an adult should be able to make an informed choice as to whether they use cannabis or not. It is not the responsibility of the state to determine what any adult does in the privacy of their own home when they cause no harm to others.
