2012 Fourth Quarter and Year End Newsletter

Thank you…

Christine – for taking a lot of the puppies that have come into Houston Beagle Rescue for the past year. You did an outstanding job of taking care of them and helping them find their forever homes. Simone – for joining the Board of Houston Beagle Rescue and maintaining our Facebook page along with all media related venues. Simone answers all the inquiries that come in via Facebook and posts what’s happening with the Beagles being adopted. She also posts our available Beagles on as many websites and media outlets as possible in hopes of finding their forever homes. All the volunteers that helped at Barnes & Noble this year. Because of their hard work, the Beagles raised over $3,500 this year. Of course, if you ask the Beagles, they worked harder than any of the humans. How we’re doing…
Since the first of the year, we have placed 143 Beagles in their forever homes. Sometimes that number includes a Beagle coming back and being adopted out again because the first home just wasn’t the right fit – but we do keep trying until the Beagle feels they are finally home furever. If you check our website, you will see that we regularly have a fair amount of senior Beagles available. Unfortunately, these are usually Beagle Rescue Beagles that have had to come back to us because something happened to their original adopters. When their families pass away or are no longer able to care for them, our Beagles come back to us and we welcome them with open paws. We know the trauma the Beagle is going through and, if possible, put them back in their original foster home. For their sake, we just hope that someone out there will realize that these Beagles have many quality years ahead of them and just need a loving home to live them out in. The one thing all of us in Beagle Rescue have learned as we’ve all had puppies and adopted rescued adult dogs – the adults are soooooooooo much easier. Why? Because you know exactly what you’re getting and don’t have to go through puppyhood and then have to wait and see what type of personality develops. Happenings…

The shorter the leash, the better control you have over your Beagle. Beagles should always be walked on a 4’ – 6’ leash – no flex leads for them please. Is it time for a nail trim? Not yours – the Beagles? How much white nail are you seeing in front of the pink quick???? Well, that’s too much – get those nails trimmed! Ever wonder what meds are safe to give your Beagle (after consultation with your Veterinarian first, of course): Imodium, Pepto-Bismol, Benadryl, Aspirin, Dramamine, Tagamet, Hydrocortisone, Gas-X, and Glucosamine. NEVER give your Beagle Acetaminophen or Ibuprofen – they are extremely toxic. Want to do something to help all the homeless pets in the Houston area? The Beagles endorse the Rescue Bank of Houston – just go to rescuebankhouston.org and see what they need. When your shopping for your Beagle’s treats – remember to avoid anything made in China or any foreign country for that matter – get only those made in the USA. A well-fitting collar, all pertinent tags (including their Houston Beagle Rescue Tag) and keeping your information up to date are essential for the safety of your Beagle. If you’ve moved, changed phone numbers, changed your email address – please let us know. If your Beagle gets lost, we need to be able to find you. And don’t forget – when you take that beautiful clean Beagle out of the tub after their bath – don’t let them leave the bathroom without putting their collars back on. That alone could be the difference between a lost or found Beagle. No matter what, ALWAYS – ALWAYS – ALWAYS have the Houston Beagle Rescue ID tag on your Beagle. If it breaks or gets lost, let us know and we’ll send you a new one. Bottom Line…
Sadly, this is the time of year when adoptions slow to a crawl and Beagles are being turned in to shelters at an alarming rate. If you can find a way to foster a Beagle in your home, please contact us.
And please never forget that we are always in need of donations – both monetary
and material, corporate matching funds and recurring donations. Please visit our
website to see how you can help the Beagles on an ongoing basis.
The Beagles always like to close the Newsletter with a poem. This isn’t exactly a
poem but the Beagles thought you might like it.
I rescued a human today
Her eyes met mine as she walked down the corridor peering apprehensively into the kennels. I felt her need instantly and knew I had to help her. I wagged my tail, not too exuberantly, so she wouldn’t be afraid. As she stopped at my kennel I blocked her view from a little accident I had in the back of my cage. I didn’t want her to know that I hadn’t been walked today. Sometimes the overworked shelter keepers get too busy and I didn’t want her to think poorly of As she read my kennel card I hoped that she wouldn’t feel sad about my past. I only have the future to look forward to and want to make a difference in She got down on her knees and made little kissy sounds at me. I shoved my shoulder and side of my head up against the bars to comfort her. Gentle fingertips caressed my neck; she was desperate for companionship. A tear fell down her cheek and I raised my paw to assure her that all would be well. Soon my kennel door opened and her smile was so bright that I instantly jumped I would promise to always be by her side. I would promise to do everything I could to see that radiant smile and sparkle in I was so fortunate that she came down my corridor. So many more are out there who haven’t walked the corridors. So many more to be saved. At least I could I rescued a human today.
THANK YOU FROM EVERYONE AT HOUSTON
