IN ORDER FOR THE DOCTOR TO PERFORM A COLONOSCOPY, A BOWEL “CLEANOUT” MUST BE COMPLETED AT HOME PRIOR TO THE PROCEDURE. A BOWEL “CLEANOUT” IS A COMBINATION OF CLEAR LIQUID DIET AND ORAL LAXATIVES. ALL OF THE ITEMS CAN BE OBTAINED AT YOUR LOCAL PHARMACY WITHOUT A PRESCRIPTION. YOU WILL NEED TO PURCHASE:
ONE 238-GRAM BOTTLE OF MIRALAX LAXATIVE
A SMALL BOX OF DUCOLAX TABLETS. NOT SUPPOSITORIES. YOU WILL
(DIABETICS MAY USE POWERADE ZERO OR CRYSTAL LIGHT)
FIVE (5) DAYS BEFORE THE PROCEDURE- STOP TAKING ASPIRIN, IBUPROFEN, ADVIL, MOTRIN, ALEVE, MEDIPREN, NAPROSYN, OR ANY OTHER “NON-STERIOD ANTI-INFLAMMATORY” MEDICATION. IF YOU ARE TAKING COUMADIN, WARFARIN, OR PLAVIX, PLEASE CONTACT THE PRESCRIBING PHYSICIAN TO DETERMINE IF IT IS SAFE TO STOP THESE MEDICATIONS PRIOR TO YOUR PROCEDURE; IF THEY FEEL IT IS NOT SAFE TO STOP THESE MEDICATIONS PLEASE ADVISE US IMMEDIATELY SO WE CAN FURTHER DISCUSS THIS MATTER WITH THEM. IF YOU HAVE DIABETES, PLEASE CONTACT YOUR DOCTOR FOR INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO TAKE ANY DIABETES-RELATED MEDICATIONS ON THE DAY BEFORE THE PROCEDURE. YOUR DIETARY INTAKE WILL BE LOWER THAN USUAL AND WE WANT TO AVOID ANY EPISODES OF LOW BLOOD SUGAR DURING THE PREP OR THE PROCEDURE. 1 DAY BEFORE YOUR COLONOSCOPY- FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS BELOW THE DAY PRIOR TO YOUR PROCEDURE.
1. AFTER A LIGHT BREAKFAST SUCH AS ONE EGG AND ONE PIECE OF
WHITE TOAST, A CLEAR LIQUID DIET SHOULD BE STARTED. - ALLOWED- WATER, TEA, COFFEE, SODA POP, CLEAR FRUIT JUICES, AND FLAVORED DRINKS (CRYSTAL LIGHT, KOOL-AID) JELL-O, CHICKEN AND BEEF BROTH, POPSICLES. NO SOLID FOOD AT ALL.
2. TAKE 2 DULCOLAX TABLETS AT NOON WITH A CLEAR LIQUID LUNCH. 3. ABOUT 4 HOURS AFTER TAKIN THE DULCOLAX TABLETS, MIX THE
ENTIRE 238-GRAM BOTTLE OF MIRALAX WITH TWO QUARTS OF GATORADE IN A LARGE PITCHER. STIR WELL, AND ADD ICE. BE SURE TO STIR THE SOLUTION UNTIL THE MIRALAX IS COMPLETELY DISSOLVED. DRINK AN 8-OZ GLASS EVERY 10-15 MINUTES UNTIL THE SOLUTION IS ENTIRELY GONE. REMAIN NEAR BATHROOM FACILITIES FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE EVENING. (IF YOU FEEL NAUSEATED. STOP FOR ONE HOUR). THEN RESUME.
4. AT 8:00 PM, TAKE THE LAST 2 DULCOLAX TABLETS. 5. CONTINUE DRINKING CLEAR LIQUIDS UNTIL BEDTIME. 6. DIABETICS WILL NEED AN ADJUSTMENT OF THEIR MEDICATIONS THIS
DAY OF COLONOSCOPY- DO NOT TAKE ANY MORNING MEDICATIONS, UNLESS YOU ARE ON MEDICINES FOR HEART DISEASE, HIGH BLOOD PRESURE, OR SEIZURES. YOU MAY TAKE THESE MEDICATIONS WITH A SMALL SIP OF WATER-PLEASE TAKE THEM AS EARLY AS YOU CAN, AT LEAST 3 HOURS BEFORE THE SCHEDULED TIME OF YOU PROCEDURE. PLEASE BRING ALL OF YOUR ROUTINE MEDICATIONS WITH YOU WHEN YOU COME TO THE HOSPITAL.
