RESEARCH
The research activity has been mainly focused in the fields of biomedical signal processing and applied mathematics. The methodological techniques have been exploited also to address related challenges in image processing and computer science, mainly biometrics. Biomedical time series analysis
Nonlinear methods for Heart Rate Variability
The study of biological time series with metrics developed within the framework of nonlinear dynamical systems had been a constant focus. The main field of application was the study of long-term fluctuations of Heart Rate Variability (HRV). The main problems tackled were: • Theoretical aspects related to: multifractality of HRV, reliability of nonlinear metrics, missing data, long-tails of the inter-beats increments probability density function. • Self-similarity, regularity and entropy measures (also multi-scales). Past and active main collaborations: prof Sergio Cerutti and prof. Maria Gabriella Signorini (Politecnico di Milano), Dr. Antonello Provenzale (ISAC-CNR), prof. Edward A. Spiegel (Columbia University, New York), prof. Marek Malik (St. George's, University of London, UK) and prof. George Manis (University of Ioannina, Greece). Biomedical signal analysis
ECG of patients undergoing atrial fibrillation
The research focused on robust and efficient algorithms for the automatic analysis of electrocardiographic (ECG) signal recorded from patients undergoing episodes of atrial fibrillation. Main problems tackled: - Separation of the Atrial and ventricular activity (both in ECG and endocavitary recordings) - Mechanisms of maintenance and termination of atrial fibrillation and the effect of drugs on atrial organization. Past and active main collaborations: prof. Luca T. Mainardi and prof. Sergio Cerutti (Politecnico di Milano), prof. Pierre Maison-Blanche (Lariboisiere University Hospital, Paris). Fetal Heart Rate (FHR) and tocodynamometer (TOCO) signals
The research focused on the analysis of fetal heart rate (FHR) variability and tocodynamometer (TOCO) signals collected during gestation. Past and active main collaborations: prof. Giovanni Magenes (University of Pavia) and prof. Maria Gabriella Signorini (Politecnico di Milano), prof. Enrico Ferrazzi, Dott.ssa Tamara Stampalija (Università di Milano). Myocardial repolarization heterogeneity
Temporal heterogeneity of ventricular repolarization is a key quantity for the development of ventricular reentrant arrhythmia. The research focuses on: • developing a novel ECG based estimator of the standard deviation of ventricular myocytes’ repolarization times based on a electrophysiological model. • developing new indexes for quantification of T-Wave Alternans (TWA). Past and active main collaborations: prof. Luca T. Mainardi (Politecnico di Milano), prof. Pablo Laguna, prof. José F. Rodriguez, prof. Esther Pueyo (University of Zaragoza, Spain), prof. Laura Burattini (Università Politecnica delle Marche, Italy). Applied Mathematics
Synchronization of coupled non-linear oscillators
Motivation: understanding more precisely synchronization mechanisms in biological phenomena, at the basis of signals like ECG or EEG, thought the study of simplified models. The scenarios of analysis had been: • mean-field phase-coupled oscillators, a situation resembling that of the sinoatrial-node cells, which start the • hierarchically coupled logistic maps, a mathematical metaphor of complex natural and biological systems, as Past and active main collaborations: prof. Neil Balmforth (University of British Columbia, Canada), Dr. Antonello Provenzale (ISAC-CNR). Non-Newtonian fluid dynamics
The theoretical researched focused on non-Newtonian fluids (common in biology), in particular when one dimension of the fluid is in first approximation negligible with respect to the others (lubrication approximation). Numerical algorithms to integrate the resulting system of partial differential equations were developed and analytical approximation derived (for short and long time scales). The work was mainly carried out at the University of California at Santa Cruz (CA, USA), under the supervision of prof. Neil Balmforth and at Imperial College (UK) with the collaboration of prof. Richard V. Craster. Privacy protection in biometrics identification procedures
Aspects related to safety of biometrics and biometric encryption (privacy) were addressed. In particular, an original algorithm that allows the verification of the identity of an individual based on a combination of multiple biometric features was developed and patented. Subsequently, the problem of “continuous” multimodal biometric authentication was tackled for those applications where operator-substitution must be avoided after an initial identification. Past and active main collaborations: prof. Vincenzo Piuri, Dr. Fabio Scotti and Dr. Stelvio Cimato, (Università di Milano). Other fields of study
Research has ranged in other areas than those listed above. In general the original contribution was always derived from a common methodological background. For example: • statistical estimates of the modelling errors in an original technique designed to evaluate the volume of worn material in acetabular component from failed hip prosthesis implants; • study of spectral methods for the solution of 2D partial differential equations of diffusion-reaction type (that arise from disparate biological or physical phenomena).
