COURSE DESCRIPTION
(750 characters, maximum):
This course has been developed to review current theory in relation to nursing practice so that the inactive
R.N. may be able to move with confidence into a staff nurse orientation and return to practice. The
material presented will emphasize trends in nursing practice and nursing education today changes in the
fundamentals of nursing skills necessary for providing effective nursing care in a variety of situation and a
reasonable comprehensive review of the up to date nursing management of the adult patient with a
medical surgical problem.

Unit 1 Introduction
General Outcome: Upon successful completion of this course, the students should be able

Unit 5 The Surgical Patient
General Outcome:
The student shall: Be able to describe perioperative nursing care.
Specific Measurable Learning Outcomes:

Upon successful completion of this unit, the student shall be able to:
Assess the needs of the patient with an inflammation as to: Institution of appropriate nursing care measures. Appropriate reporting and recording of data. Assess the nursing needs of a patient with an infection. Assess the patient's learning needs as regards prevention and treatment of infections. Define the types of isolation technique and the purpose for the use of each. Maintain sterile technique while doing procedures calling for surgical asepsis. Identify the psycho-social needs of the pre-operative patient. List the areas of teaching to be considered by the nurse when preparing the patient for surgery: Information related to the specific surgical procedure to be performed. Information related to the nurse patient activities before, during and after surgery. List the reasons for the use of common diagnostic tests on the pre-operative patient, including X-rays, blood chemistry, CBC, urinalysis, EKG, and coagulation studies. List the methods utilized for collection of specimens: List the preparations that must be checked prior to surgery. Differentiate between the various types of anesthesia (general, spinal, local). Assess the psychological and physical needs of the patient immediately following surgery. I. disorder. Discuss the nurse's role in assisting with the following diagnostic procedures: Describe or perform insertion of a Levine tube. Describe or perform insertion of Salem-Sump.
